My secret confession – When I’m at the supermarket checkout buying food I peek at what the person in front is buying and look at their skin. Sad I know, but I can’t help it! I guess I’m forever studying factors that affect the look of our skin.

Although genetics does plays a part in our skin story, one of the major influences is our diet and lifestyle. It’s a huge topic to cover so today I’m going to focus on one fruit, that if consumed more frequently on a weekly basis, would result in improving the quality of your skin, fast!

The fruit in question is avocado. Sometimes confused as a vegetable due to it’s green colour, the humble avocado is packed full to the brim with skin and health boosting nutrients.

Nutrients such as:

High amounts of monounsaturated fats, also known as ‘good fats’. Good fats help raise the beneficial heart protecting cholesterol in our blood. This helps to lower our bad cholesterol, the kind that sticks to our artery walls, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The good fats contained in avocados have the effect of nourishing our skin, helping restore hydration levels, whilst reducing skin irritation and redness through cell repair.

Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps to reduce internal inflammation – the biggest cause of skin ageing and also acts as an antioxidant, protecting our skin from the suns harmful rays.

Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps protect from free radical damage from the environment and UV exposure. It also helps with the formation of collagen and elastin, helping to keep our skin supple

Carotenoids. These compounds help protect your skin from free radical damage that leads to visible signs of ageing.

Vitamin B5 and B6. These b vitamins each play a role in metabolism, cell growth, nerve function, hormones and oxygen carrying capacity in the blood.

What ways can you introduce avocados into your diet?

I personally always go for the ripe and ready avocados, which can be purchased from most supermarkets.

You can eat them simply chopped up on their own, or if that’s not for you they’re great mashed on top of rye bread with poached eggs.
You can add them to salads. They go great with Tuna and spring onion or grilled chicken. Home juicing has gained lots of popularity, try adding an avocado to your juice / smoothie. They go well with spinach, berries and banana topped up with almond milk.

Topical application

I work with and retail avocado oil. The preparation I use is high quality and specially prepared to penetrate the skin effectively. It’s great to use on normal skin but particularly helpful for dry, stressed eczema type skin. The oil can be applied on it’s own or made up as a blend with other ingredients or added to your bespoke moisturiser. When purchased alone avocado oil retails at £60
As a budget option you could always mash avocado up neat and apply to your face as a mask.

What benefits will I see on my skin?

Your skin will feel softer to touch and more silky. Lines will seem softer and your skin will look plumper. Remember most benefit will be gained if you consume them as part of an all round healthy diet with limited processed foods.
