What Is Microneedling? Everything You Need to Know & Why I Use Dermapen
Introducing the New Dermapen
I’ve been performing microneedling treatments since I first opened the clinic doors in 2010. It’s one of those treatments that has truly stood the test of time - because it works.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This triggers the body’s natural healing response, boosting collagen and elastin production.
The micro-channels created during treatment also allow us to deliver powerful topical actives deeper into the skin - including hyaluronic acid, growth factors, peptides, and exosomes.
What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?
-
Improves skin texture and tone, reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and roughness
-
Softens pitted acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and other types of scarring
-
Minimises pores, tightens and refines the skin
-
Boosts collagen production, promoting firmer, more youthful skin
-
Enhances product absorption, helping serums penetrate deeper for better results
What’s the Downtime?
Immediately after treatment, your skin may appear red and feel similar to sunburn. This usually settles within 24-48 hours.
By day 6, your skin should be fully back to normal.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
A course of three treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart, is ideal for targeting specific concerns.
Some clients also choose to have microneedling ad hoc to maintain youthful, supple skin.
Dermaroller vs Microneedling - What’s the Difference?
You might have heard of the Dermaroller and wondered how it differs. The answer?
They’re essentially the same treatment - but the tools and techniques have evolved.
Around 15 years ago, it was common to use a manual handheld dermaroller. Today, electronic microneedling pens offer a more consistent, customisable, and comfortable treatment, with better results.
Is There a Difference Between Home Rollers and In-Clinic Treatments?
Yes - and the biggest difference is needle depth.
As a medical practitioner, I’m licensed to needle at greater depths than beauty salons or at-home rollers.
Greater depth = greater results, especially for severely aged skin or deep scarring.
Home rollers are great for maintaining results between appointments, but they can’t compete with in-clinic treatment.
Time to Upgrade
With the rise of regenerative skin treatments like exosomes (which are delivered via microneedling), it felt like the perfect time to upgrade my pen – and Dermapen was the obvious choice.
