The Holistic Benefits of Yoga: From Heart Health to Stress Relief
Yoga, an ancient practice combining physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation, offers numerous health benefits.
Some of you may know I qualified as a Strala Yoga Guide back in 2017 and I still practice most days.
Stress and tension seriously take their toll in accelerating the ageing process.
It’s vital we don’t let stress make a home within the body and Yoga, in particular Strala, is a great way to help tension diffuse from within, so we can let vital life force energy flow through us, invigorating all our cells with life.
Additionally, drawing from my 24 years of experience as a registered nurse and working within cardiology at a senior level, I can attest to the profound benefits of yoga on cardiovascular health and overall well-being.
Heart health is a passion of mine, so to see positive changes without the use of pharmacological drugs is astounding.
Physical Benefits of Yoga
-
Improves Cardiovascular Health
A regular yoga practice can enhance cardiovascular function, helping to lower blood pressure and improve heart health. Studies have shown that yoga can help regulate blood glucose levels, lower cortisol levels in the bloodstream and enhance oxygenation uptake within the cells.
-
Enhances Flexibility and Muscular Strength
Yoga significantly improves flexibility and muscular strength. Consistent practice of yoga postures (asanas) leads to increased flexibility and muscle tone, a must if we want to move with strength, ease and grace as we age.
-
Supports Respiratory Health
Yoga practices, particularly breathing exercises (pranayama), enhance lung capacity and efficiency. This improvement in respiratory function contributes to overall better health. Oxygen is vital for every cell in the body to function optimally.
-
Aids in Weight Management
Engaging in yoga regularly can help manage body weight by improving metabolic functions and promoting mindful eating habits. It may look easy compared to weight training, but once you begin, you will see that energising focused practices in particular won’t feel easy and your body will let you know it’s been working!
-
Reduces Stress and Enhances Mental Health
Yoga is renowned for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. The relaxation induced by yoga initiates the relaxation response in our body to switch on, stabilising the autonomic nervous system, promoting parasympathetic dominance, which is crucial for stress management.
-
Improves Brain Health
Yoga has been shown to positively affect brain structure and function. Studies have found that yoga can enhance cognitive functions, such as memory and attention, and may help mitigate age-related cognitive decline.
Why is Strala Yoga different?
Strala Yoga, founded by Tara Stiles, former personal yoga instructor to Deepak Chopra, emphasises ease and natural movement.
This approach focuses on moving with grace and connecting the body and mind, which can make the practice more accessible and enjoyable.
After trying lots of different yoga styles, this approach felt best in my body, restored me through burnout and continues to be my lifelong support to this day.
Here’s how Strala Yoga can specifically benefit your health:
-
Promotes Ease and Comfort
Strala Yoga encourages practicing with ease. This means we drop the very habit on the mat that we are carrying with us in life - believing that we have to force, tense, push and struggle to achieve great things, when in fact it’s the opposite. This focus on comfort and the only goal to feel good in your body can help you maintain a consistent practice without the strain that sometimes accompanies more rigorous styles.
-
Enhances Mind-Body Connection
By emphasising natural movement, mindfulness and allowing our breath to do most of the work to move us, strengthens the connection between your mind and body. This holistic approach supports overall mental well-being and helps in stress reduction.
-
Adaptable for All Levels
Strala Yoga is designed to be accessible for all fitness levels, making it easier for beginners to start and for advanced practitioners to deepen their practice. The adaptable nature of Strala allows everyone to benefit from yoga regardless of their experience level. You can choose restorative gentle practices, or more energised practices, which show us how to approach challenge with ease.
-
Incorporates Meditation and touch
The integration of meditation and touch into physical movement helps switch on the relaxation response inside, developing a deeper sense of connection to ourselves, improving mental clarity and emotional balance, whilst providing a comprehensive approach to health.
Practical Tips for Incorporating Yoga into Daily Life
-
Start Small: Begin with short, manageable sessions of 10-15 minutes and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable.
-
Create a Routine: Set aside a specific time each day for your yoga practice to build consistency. Morning sessions can set you up for the day ahead to flow more smoothly, while evening sessions can help you unwind and sleep better.
-
Focus on Breathing: Incorporate pranayama techniques into your routine to improve respiratory health and reduce stress.
-
Stay Mindful: Use yoga as uninterrupted time for introspection and self exploration. Every habit we form in life will show up on the mat, helping to give us a deeper understanding of what’s serving us and what we need to invite more of, or how we may be holding ourselves back, or hindering ourselves from fulfilling our true potential. This helps in connecting the mind and body, promoting overall well-being.
-
Seek Guidance: If you're new to yoga, consider joining a beginners class or using online resources to ensure you perform the postures correctly and safely.
Strala have a brilliant app where they upload daily yoga practices ranging from 20 minutes to an hour. Give it a go in the comfort of your own home.
